How many times have you changed jobs?

I’ve worked in retail, high tech sector, education, and food service. I’ve changed fields at least six times.

Are you working in the field you originally trained in?

I achieved my Bachelor of Education degree from Ottawa University after getting my Bachelor of Arts at Laurier. I don’t use either of my degrees for the field I am currently working in. A hospitality or business degree would have been a much better fit.

What’s one thing young people should know about choosing a career?

Do what you love. Find something you are good at that makes you happy and figure out how to provide for yourself by doing it every day.

What’s your favourite flavor of ice cream?

I’m not an ice cream fan, but I do like butterscotch ripple once or twice a year. Dairy Queen used to have butterscotch dip cones that were my favourite!

Current field of expertise?

Human Resources (talent management, organizational development, organizational culture)

Name one reason people hire you.

My ability to deliver results.

How many times have you changed jobs?

I’ve worked for four organizations throughout my career in full-time positions and I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of jobs within most of the organizations.

Are you working in the field you originally trained in?

I was originally trained in recruitment and sales. I’ve continued to be involved in recruitment throughout my entire career and sales for the first 23 years. My portfolio has grown over time to include initiatives that are dedicated to helping employees achieve their full potential and that help organizations attract and retain top talent. Examples would be learning and development, career management, and succession management.

What’s one thing young people should know about choosing a career?

Choose a career that you know will suit your skills and personality, that you will truly enjoy, and will allow you to learn, grow and develop. Do what you know is right for you; not what others think is right for you. Don’t get “stuck” in your job. Be open to new job/career opportunities. Change can be a very positive thing!

What’s your favourite flavor of ice cream?

Haagen Dazs maple walnut ice cream – yum!

Thank You Tami!

Human Resources

Name one reason people hire you.

I deliver results.

How many times have you changed jobs?

This is my 5th job and 2nd career

Are you working in the field you originally trained in?

My 1st career was in Administrative Support – I had 3 jobs with different companies.  First for a computer company, which included working in Waterloo then opening a new office for them in the GTA and working there for over a year (which was exciting).  Then I worked for an Architect firm.  Finally, I worked for a medical device manufacturer.

My 2nd career was in Human Resources – staying with the medical device manufacturer, I created a new role within the company for a Corporate Trainer and was awarded the job – this was my leap into the world of Human Resources.   I now work for an Angel Investor and have an HR Business Partner role and also manage our office.

What’s one thing young people should know about choosing a career?

It definitely won’t be your “only” career so be open to opportunities.

What’s your favourite flavor of ice cream?

Marble slab - cheesecake ice cream with Skor bits, chocolate chips and some caramel sauce. Delish!

Thank You Sharon!

What is your current field of expertise?

Inspirational Speaker/Youth Coach/ Author

Name one reason people hire you.

I am awesome! Kidding. Seriously…people want to know how to be their best selves and how to bring real success into their lives. And, I might have a few ideas to help them.

How many time have you changed jobs?

About 3 times…lawyer to Deputy Judge… to full-time Mom…to inspirational speaker, coach and author.

Are you working in the field you originally trained in?

Nope. Wow…long story. Essentially, when I retired from law, I had time to heal and reflect on where I wanted to go. I began learning some really cool things. I felt strongly that others would benefit from hearing about some of these things…so the speaking career began. Everything else flowed from that.

What’s one thing young people should know about choosing a career?

Absolutely align with what it is that excites you…do nothing less!!!

What’s your favourite flavor of ice cream?

Peanut butter and chocolate Baskin and Robbins ice cream! Yummy!

Kayleigh Platz

Communitech
BEP Volunteer Since 2013 (Speakers Bureau)

What is your current field of expertise?

Social media and communications

Name one reason people hire you.

This is two, but firstly I’ve always worked to make a job for myself in the organization I wanted to work with.  Secondly, I try to always smile and be genuinely interested in the other person.

How many time have you changed jobs?

Three times over two companies

Are you working in the field you originally trained in?

I trained as a writer and anthropologist. When I applied to university, I thought I was going to be a magazine editor. I fell in love with the medium of social media during university, and was able to begin studying and then working in it.

I was at the right place at the right time when social media became a career option.

What’s one thing young people should know about choosing a career?

I’ve always tried to do what I’m passionate about even if it doesn’t sound like a typical career path. I love connecting with people and making them feel valued. Knowing my strengths has helped me forge my own path that suits me and also allows me to help out my team.

I’m still excited to go into work everyday – I’m not sure everyone can say that.

What’s your favourite flavor of ice cream?

I love love love cotton candy and superman ice cream. I have the ice cream palate of a four year old!

Thank You Kayleigh!
